September 27,2010 "“From the White House to Your House”"
Ruth Loiseau, a nationally recognized master floral designer and owner of Ruth L in Suffield, visits us to demonstrate her floral talents and share stories and photos of her experiences during her years at the White House. Ruth is an accomplished lecturer in the Art of Floral Design and carries an extensive array of clients. Recently she was the keynote speaker at the 2010 Bouquets to Art event at The de Young Museum in San Francisco. She worked at the White House across four administrations: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, William Clinton and George W. Bush. The White House flower shop continues to use her for special events for the Obama administration.

Dr. Ginsberg offers years of “green” experience and insights to help us focus on decreasing our various footprints while building a more sustainable lifestyle and future. His topics are far ranging: toxics, plastics, solid waste, energy consumption, consumer products, our homes and cars, sourcing our food, and of course, your questions.
Gary Ginsberg, Ph.D., is a toxicologist for the State of Connecticut. He holds faculty appointments at Yale and the University of Connecticut School of Community Medicine. He serves on a panel on toxics at the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the U.S. EPA’s Science Advisory Board. He co-authored the popular book “What’s Toxic and What’s Not” and numerous other technical articles on toxicology & public health. Dr. Ginsberg hosts his own radio program, “Greener Living with Dr. G” on WTIC AM 1080 on Saturdays in the Hartford area.

Terry Stoleson, a long-time member and former President of Long Hill Garden Club, is a Nationally Accredited Master Flower Show Judge Emeritus. For over 30 years Terry has shared her knowledge of floral design through teaching and lecturing. She has received a multitude of awards and honors from the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut and is an active member of Creative Arrangers of Connecticut. For many years Terry has been pursuing her passion of studying and foraging for wild mushrooms.
By popular and enthusiastic demand, Terry will demonstrate her talents in creating designs with flare!

December 13, 2010 Holiday Pot Luck Luncheon
Last year’s event was such a resounding success that we plan to celebrate the holidays once again with a potluck luncheon at the library. Each attendee will sign up to bring an item of food to share. This party is a wonderful opportunity for members to mingle and become better acquainted, and a sing-along with Aurora Montini at the piano will provide some lively entertainment!
January 24, 2011 "Garden Earth"
Maureen Haseley-Jones, aka The English Lady, in her naturally humorous style and upbeat manner, teaches us how to create a beautiful garden and maintain it organically without the use of harmful poisons, proving that the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Maureen continues her lineage of renowned horticulturists whose landscaping heritage dates as far back as the seventeenth century. Maureen is a highly sought after designer and gardening expert and we’ll get to see that in person. Her cheeky style as the “garden guru” on WRCH 100.5 FM has earned her a wide fan base. Maureen lectures throughout Connecticut and is a prolific provocative columnist for newspapers and magazines. As if this weren’t enough, Maureen has a degree from the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama and performed on the stage in the U.K. This is a must attend event.

"Relax, It’s Only Garden Photography"
Through an interactive slideshow and lecture, Rich Pomerantz explains the principles of garden photography ranging from camera functions to composition and lighting. Rich is a renowned, full-time freelance photographer and a lifelong gardener. He’s traveled extensively in Europe, living in Israel before attending the University of VT. He went on to Brooklyn Law School where he earned his JD. Rich began his professional photography career while still in high school. His images have graced the pages of many garden, shelter and living publications ranging from Garden Design, Horticulture, Fine Gardening, Organic Gardening, National Geographic for Kids, Coastal Photographer, Traditional Home and others. His pictures have been used to illustrate Sierra Club calendars and have been featured on the cover of Frommers Travel Guides and garden and trade books for most of the major book publishers. Rich gives back by teaching garden and flower photography classes at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the NY Botanical Gardens. He continues to pursue his love of travel and photography on assignment and on his own, both in the U.S. and abroad. A noted author, Rich’s first book, Wild Horses of the Dunes is in its second printing. Other books include Great Gardens of the Berkshires and Hudson River Valley Farms.

Margery Winters talk on native plants will focus on their beauty, benefits, and the importance of recapturing native habitats in our own gardens. Margery is an instructor & manages the native plant gardens at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton, She is a past program chairman of Federated Garden Club’s Landscape Design Study Program & Master Landscape Design Consultant. Margery brings her passion & interest about how private & public sectors can work together as good stewards of our natural environment. She is active in her community of Simsbury as a past president of the Garden Club, member of the Open Space Committee, board member of the Land Trust, and Vice Chair on the Inland/Wetland Conservation Commission Trust. Margery has long been an advocate for Connecticut’s river & land issues and is the former Director of Programs & Research with Rivers Alliance of CT.
April 25, 2011 "Pressed Flower Art"
Lisabeth Billingsley is a uniquely talented artist whose work features pressed flowers and pressed seaweed. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in NY, she worked in the fashion business for 25 years. Lisabeth is a member of the International Pressed Flower Art Society, the Worldwide Pressed Flower Guild, the Essex Art Association, Madison Art Society, Clinton Art Society and the Guilford Art League. She teaches workshops at the Guilford Art Center and the Arts Center at Killingworth. Her desire today is to inspire us with slides and framed samples of her work and demonstrate and explain how flowers are pressed using three different methods, how to plan a picture and more. Part of her talk centers on sharing both successful and unsuccessful pressing stories
